Putting a price on biodiversity?

It was my pleasure to be interviewed as an expert for an article in the NZZ am Sontag. Biocredit has been discussed along with the development of the Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework in recent years. Although the concept is still somewhat fancy, it has received a lot of attention, especially from the business sector. My argument lies on the lens of governance, policy, and institutional arrangement, that not only new technologies but getting the institutions right for operating this mechanism is very important. It is possible, but currently hypothetical, that numerous site-based projects, jurisdictional approaches, and private sector commitments have emerged. But it is only when these three can overlap in so-called "trifecta jurisdictions" that we can expect the challenges and criticisms of previous market-based mechanisms, such as carbon credits, to be addressed and transformative outcomes to be achieved.
